Royal Dee Winter Canoe Expedition

8th - 11th January 2027

The River Dee in January is wild, crisp, and unforgettable. Flowing from the high Cairngorms, it winds through snow-dusted valleys and forests, with mountains rising white against the sky. Along the way, we paddle past places steeped in Scottish legend — from quiet pinewoods alive with red squirrels to Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s Highland retreat. Wildlife is part of the magic: red deer moving across the ridges, golden eagles soaring overhead, and otters slipping silently through the banks. Evenings bring warmth and camaraderie as we gather wood, light fires, and share hearty hot meals beneath a blazing winter sky. With specialist kit provided, right down to a winter sleeping bag, you’ll be safe, warm, and fully immersed in Scotland’s wildest season. As Joe puts it: “The River Dee is my absolute favourite multi-day canoe trip in the whole of the UK… even in January. The snow, the wildlife, the silence — it’s pure magic.” – Joe Alexander.
