Sea Kayak Beginner Full Day Adventure Course at Chester-le-Street

£72 per person

Your day is based around a journey to explore some of the best bits of the River Wear; you will learn and practice new skills as you paddle. Each course is tailored to suit the aspirations of the group, but a typical course will involve personal paddling skills and stroke development, rescue and emergency procedures, tidal planning and navigation.

Our friendly, experienced kayak coaches will deliver the course in a fun and relaxed way to help build your confidence and get the most out of your paddling.

The Introduction to kayaking course is ideally suited to beginners, people who have little or no experience in a kayak, but who want a fun and exhilarating experience and to learn the skills necessary to go on a longer more adventurous journey. This course will provide you with the following skills:

Equipment

  • How to launch and land your kayak
  • Basic kayak control & paddling techniques
  • Learn the basics of how to predict the tide and plan a journey

When you arrive at our venue you will be met by a member of our team and they will fit you with your equipment and you will be given a short safety briefing and explanation in the use of the equipment before getting onto the water. The session will take place on a calm stretch of water. You will be taught how to sit comfortably, control and stay safe in your kayak as well as hopefully interacting with some of the local wildlife.

Prerequisite (what experience should I have)
  • None, just happy to be on the water.
  • Suitable for ages 13+ (children aged 10 to 12 will be placed in a double kayak)
  • Children under 18 are required to have a parent or legal guardian on the session. 
What’s included

We provide you with all the kayak and safety equipment.

  • Wetsuit – please check your wetsuit requirements in the sizing chart below, you will be asked to provide your wetsuit size required during the booking process.
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Kayak, paddle and spray deck (in wet and windy conditions you will be supplied with a cagoule.)
  • Pictures from your session will be available to download from our Flickr account
What should I bring to the adventure?
  • Swimwear for under your wetsuit
  • A big fluffy towel for afterwards
  • Soft shoes to wear inside your kayak that might get a bit wet (no flip flops or crocs please)
  • Sun screen and a sun hat
  • Feel free to bring shorts and tee on a warm sunny day (no wetsuit required)
  • Packed lunch and a flask for out on the water
Venue location, parking and your arrival details

A beautiful location for an enjoyable kayak experience. This section of the River Wear is well sheltered from the elements and allows us to paddle on a calm stretch of flowing water. The river is abundant with wildlife, and provides a great little heaven for spotting kingfishers, otters, heron, salmon and sea trout, mute swans, muscovy ducks, great black-backed gulls, wood pigeon, and the occasional glimpse of the roe deer! 

This great riverside venue, at the sea cadets centre in Chester-le-Street, and the address and postcode can be found below. There is a pay and display carpark and the cost for the day will be approx. £5.

Your kayak team will meet you at our riverside base. Our venue has changing rooms and toilets.
