Ice Climbing Winter Weekend in Rjukan, Norway

£720 per person. Secure your spot with a £200 deposit. Estimated return flight prices £200.

Rjukan is quite simply an ice climber’s paradise. There’s a wide range of ice falls, with short walks from our transport, and a stable climate guaranteeing cold weather and reliable conditions. There are over 200 different ice falls from single pitch test pieces, to 400m long multi-pitch classics.

This trip is heavily focused on our guests gaining confidence in ice climbing. Therefore, we spend a lot of time looking at technique, movement and listening to our guests needs, with a view that they will be inspired and confident by the end of the weekend. The weekend will be run on single pitch and multi pitch terrain in and around Rjukan. This great location is only a 2.5 hour transfer from Oslo.

You’ll gain knowledge about the skills and techniques required to move on the ice. What will we learn?

  • Use of crampons
  • Use of axes
  • Climbing with axes and crampons
  • Climbing without axes (just crampons)
  • Placing of ice protection (ice screws) / snow protection (snow anchors)
  • Making ice belays
  • Making ice abseils, with and without ice screws
  • Single pitch climbing/top roping and abseil
  • Multi-pitch climbing/ abseiling
  • Route choice and assessing ice quality
  • Basics on avalanches avoidance

We mentor our guests, building their confidence, listening to their expectations and assisting in them reaching their goals. Once technique and confidence are honed, we can move on to lead climbing and multi-pitch climbs at a level that suits everyone. We keep our groups small with the focus on good communication and a good learning environment.
